Wild Lettuce and Passionflower Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the tall, bitter, milky-sapped wild cousin of garden lettuce, and the flowering vine of the American Southeast. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product for adults only - it causes drowsiness and must not be taken in more than the label serving - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend
- Wild lettuce herb - a biennial of European roadsides and field edges that shoots up to head height in its second year, with prickly-edged leaves and a bitter white sap that dries to a brown resin. Apothecaries once sold that dried sap as lactucarium and nicknamed the plant opium lettuce, but the name is misleading: it contains no opium and no opioid compounds. Its bitter constituents are sesquiterpene lactones such as lactucin and lactucopicrin.
- Passionflower herb - the leaf, stem and flower of the climbing vine of the southeastern United States, known for its elaborate purple-fringed blossoms; the aerial parts, not the fruit, are used here.
Why a tincture
The two dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a strongly bitter taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving, and do not use it for long periods without a practitioner. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-herb blend is available as Wild Lettuce and Passionflower Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
This blend causes drowsiness, must not be taken in more than the label serving, and is for adults only. Please read before use.
- Drowsiness: both herbs can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Do not combine with alcohol, sleeping pills, benzodiazepines, sedative antihistamines or other products that slow the nervous system.
- Do not exceed the label serving: wild lettuce in large amounts has caused dilated pupils, rapid heartbeat, restlessness, blurred vision and difficulty urinating. Stop and seek medical help if any of these occur.
- Not an opiate: wild lettuce contains no opioid compounds and is not a painkiller. Do not use it as a substitute for prescribed medicines.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use. Passionflower can stimulate the uterus.
- Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.
- Antidepressants: do not combine with MAO-inhibitor antidepressants.
- Allergies: wild lettuce is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant. Avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums or daisies.
- Age and duration: adults only; not for long-term use.
