Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus, now classified as Astragalus mongholicus by Kew), known in China as Huang Qi, is a perennial of the pea family, Fabaceae, native to the grasslands and open forests of northern China, Mongolia, Korea, and eastern Siberia and grown on a large scale in Shanxi, Gansu, and Inner Mongolia. It grows 50 to 100 centimeters with hairy stems, pinnate leaves of 12 to 18 pairs of small oval leaflets, and loose racemes of pale yellow pea flowers followed by inflated, papery pods. The long, fibrous, yellow-cored taproot is harvested after four or more years and sliced into tongue-shaped pieces that taste faintly sweet. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
