Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is a tall, velvety perennial of the mallow family, Malvaceae, native to marshes and riverbanks of Europe, western Asia and North Africa and naturalized in salt marshes of the eastern United States. It grows 1-1.5 m tall with soft, grey-green, lobed leaves covered in dense down and pale pink, five-petaled flowers in late summer. The thick, white, fibrous taproot is full of mucilage that turns water slimy, and before gelatin it was the thickener of the original marshmallow sweet. We extract the dried leaf and the dried root separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
