Saint John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a perennial of the St John's wort family, Hypericaceae, native to Europe, western Asia and North Africa and naturalized across North America, where it grows in meadows, roadsides and open woods. It reaches 30 to 90 cm with upright stems marked by two raised lines, and small oblong leaves dotted with translucent oil glands that look like perforations against the light. Clusters of bright yellow, five-petaled flowers with black-dotted margins open around midsummer and stain the fingers red when crushed. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
