Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is common or garden thyme, a low evergreen subshrub of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to the dry hillsides of the western Mediterranean and grown as a culinary herb worldwide. It forms a woody, spreading mound 15 to 30 cm tall with wiry stems and tiny, grey-green, oval leaves rolled slightly under at the edges, releasing a warm, sharp scent of thymol when brushed. Clusters of small pale pink to lilac two-lipped flowers appear in early summer and are much visited by bees. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
