Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a tall perennial of the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, native to Europe and western Asia and naturalized across the northeastern United States and Canada in damp meadows, ditches and woodland edges. It rises 1 to 1.5 meters on a hollow, grooved stem with opposite, pinnately divided leaves of seven to twenty-five toothed leaflets, topped in summer by dense, flat-topped clusters of small, sweet-scented pale pink to white flowers. The short rhizome and its many fibrous roots develop a strong, musky, earthy smell when dried that cats find irresistible. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
